Xanthan gum

Chemical additive used in the oil industry (C35H49O29)n, additive E415. Allows you to improve the rheological properties of drilling fluids and adapt technical processes. Xanthan gum is one of the components that affects the efficiency of oil production.

Uses of xanthan gum:

  • effectively in all water-based drilling fluids. Including fresh water, sea water, salt water systems and dense brines. Xanthan gum provides a rheological profile of increased viscosity at low shear rates. Reduces shear characteristics at high shear rates. These characteristics often result in the formation of fluids where the ultimate shear stress is higher than the plastic viscosity.
  • as a structure former and thickener in drilling fluids. It simplifies the drilling of wells, increases oil recovery from reservoirs at a late stage of oil production and allows maximum oil extraction from the well. A drilling fluid containing xanthan gum is more effective at flushing rock out of a well, has high lubricating properties and retains its rheological properties over a wide pH range.
  • provides a rheological profile of increased viscosity at slow shear and reduced shear characteristics at high shear rates. These properties of xanthan gum make it possible to obtain fluids with a limiting shear stress above plastic viscosity and to increase the volume of pumping the solution through the well. It is used primarily when carrying out horizontal directional drilling (HDD), where the number of collapses is reduced and the stability of wells and the structure of the formation are preserved.

Additionally:

The xanthan solution is resistant to enzymes, alcohols, surfactants, acids (except hydrochloric) and alkalis, high (up to 120ºC) and low (up to −18ºC) temperatures. When mixed with other gums, the thickening effect is higher than for each thickener separately. Xanthan solution is characterized by high viscosity values ​​in the pH range from 2 to 12 and pseudoplasticity. Thanks to these properties, it forms a good structure, stabilizes products for a long time and extends their shelf life. Widely used in the production of sauces, dairy products, ice cream, desserts, baked goods, drinks, etc.

Xanthan gum is non-toxic, fire- and explosion-proof.

In terms of the degree of impact on the human body, it belongs to the 4th hazard class (according to GOST 12.1.007).
